In late February, Memphis gynecologist Sanjeev Kumar was arrested and charged with sexual abuse, medical fraud, and various other federal crimes in relation to the alleged abuse of at least four women at Kumar’s practice. Kumar is accused of enticing the women to travel across state lines to his clinic, where he subjected them to abuse under the guise of medical procedures and illicitly reused unsanitary medical devices from 2019 to 2024. Since the charges were filed, more than 200 additional women have contacted attorneys about potential abuse by the doctor.

Memphis Gynecologist Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Has Been Federally Charged With Sexual Abuse and Medical Fraud
For years, Sanjeev Kumar ran the Poplar Avenue Clinic Women’s Health and Med Spa, which was raided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 2024. The FBI now asserts that Kumar subjected patients to abuse and unsafe medical practices between 2019 and 2024. Kumar was charged with enticement and inducement to travel to engage in illegal sex acts, adulteration of single-use devices, mislabeling of reprocessed single-use devices, adulteration of hysteroscopes cleared for reprocessing, and health care fraud.
According to the FBI, Kumar allegedly sexually abused women by conducting medically unnecessary gynecologic procedures with medical devices held under unsanitary conditions and reused on patients without sanitization or disposal. Kumar did not inform patients that he was reusing single-use or improperly sanitized devices before inserting the devices vaginally. Then, Kumar billed federal Medicare and Medicaid insurance programs for hysteroscopy biopsy services, presenting the treatments as medically necessary and performed correctly with new or sterilized equipment.
Kumar pleaded not guilty to all 23 counts against him on March 12, 2025, eight days after he was released from custody on bond. His next hearing is scheduled for April 16, 2025.
