According to Tennessee Highway Patrol Colonel Tracy Trott, the number of people killed in fatal car crashes in Tennessee for the first half of 2011 is less than the number killed during the first half of 2010. From January 1, 2011, through June 30, 2011, 440 people have died in Tennessee car crashes, down from 517 fatalities during those dates in 2010. While fewer motorists have been killed, more have been arrested for driving under the influence (“DUI”). In the first half of 2011, Tennessee law enforcement officials have arrested 2132 Tennesseans for DUI compared to 1631 in 2010, an increase of 30.7%. Trott says there is a “direct correlation between the Tennessee Highway Patrol’s increased efforts to crack down on drunk drivers and the number of people killed in motor vehicle accidents on [Tennessee] roadways.”
Recently, law enforcement agencies across Tennessee have increased efforts to keep our streets and highways safe. For example, roadblocks are often set up to catch drivers who speed and drive under the influence. These roadblocks also deter drivers from engaging in that type of behavior. Unfortunately, however, drivers still get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol and put others in harm’s way. Scientific studies have proven the negative effects alcohol has on a driver. A driver’s judgment becomes impaired. In addition, a driver’s reaction times become slower. If you have lost a loved one in a car accident in Shelby County, call the Memphis auto accident attorneys at Nahon, Saharovich, and Trotz (“NST Law”) at 901-683-7000 or 1-800-LAW-4004.
A fatal car accident is painful for all involved, especially surviving family members. However, if a reasonable settlement cannot be reached with the defendant driver or his insurance company, NST Law will be prepared to file a lawsuit and fight for you in court. Your NST lawyer can aggressively pursue maximum damages for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering. To prove these damages, your NST lawyer can retain various experts. Medical experts can document hospital bills, surgery costs, and medication expenses. Vocational economists can compute a deceased’s loss of future wages. Psychiatric experts can evaluate the pain and suffering a family member experiences after losing a loved one in a crash. In addition, your NST lawyer can utilize knowledge of Tennessee law to pursue punitive damages if the defendant driver has been convicted of DUI.

One bicyclist died in the crash and the other suffered minor injuries. The Tennessee Highway Patrol accident report stated the driver had been drinking alcohol prior to causing the crash. Police say additional charges may be filed against the driver.
Bicycle accidents can produce devastating results. A rider’s helmet and protective gear may not protect him from the impact of a moving car or truck. When a Team NST lawyer can prove another driver’s negligence, a client is more likely to recover maximum damages in a bicycle accident case. For the damages portion of a claim, NST lawyers fight for clients to obtain maximum compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering, and lost wages. NST lawyers may consult with doctors and medical specialists who can determine and prove the crash caused a bicyclist’s death. NST lawyers have years of experience interpreting medical data and speaking with medical experts. NST lawyers can also retain medical and economic experts to document medical bills incurred by the deceased, such as surgeries, CT scans, and X-rays. NST lawyers can retain a vocational economist to compute future lost wages. Since lost wages and medical bills can be burdensome and stressful, NST lawyers can fight for families to recover damages for the pain and suffering they experience as a result of the crash. According to the New York Times, Syracuse, New York, and Hartford, Connecticut, have had success reducing distracted driving. Over the past 12 months, those cities have issued nearly 20,000 tickets for illegal use of a cell phone while driving, which includes texting while driving. In addition to stepping up law enforcement, the cities launched high-profile education campaigns that illustrate the dangers of distracted driving, such as wrongful death. The results have been noticeable, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (“NHTSA”). In Syracuse, handheld cell phone use and texting while driving have decreased 33%. In Hartford, handheld cell phone use has decreased 57% while texting has decreased 75%. NHTSA Secretary Ray LaHood said these results demonstrate that “strong laws, combined with highly visible police enforcement, can significantly reduce dangerous texting and cell phone use behind the wheel.”
Distracted driving is dangerous. In 2009, 20% of car crashes in the United States involved some form of distracted driving.
