Tennessee Department of Transportation Reports Increase in Fatal Car Accidents in Cumberland County, Tennessee

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

According to the Associated Press, Tennessee officials reported an increase in fatal car accidents this year in Cumberland County, Tennessee.  The Tennessee Department of Transportation (“TDOT”) reported 12 fatal car crashes in Cumberland County so far in 2011, up from one in 2010.  Half of these accidents have occurred on Interstate 40.  TDOT and local law enforcement agencies will team up to set up roadblocks on major roads and Interstate 40, looking for impaired drivers, speeders, and persons not wearing seat belts.

Causes of fatal car accidents include speeding, distracted driving, and driving under the influence.  When a driver travels over the speed limit, he may lose control of his vehicle and cause an accident.  If a driver travels over 100 miles per hour, the probability of a car wreck skyrockets.  By setting up roadblocks, TDOT hopes to catch speeding drivers or encourage drivers not to speed for fear of getting caught.  In addition, TDOT hopes the roadblocks will reduce the number of drunk drivers on Tennessee streets.

According to KWTX Texas, a Texas jury convicted a 23-year-old woman of intoxication assault of a police officer after crashing head-on into a police car in College Station, Texas, in January 2010. She was driving 80 miles per hour in a 30 miles per hour zone when she slammed into the police car. The police officer was permanently disabled after the crash and is will never be able to serve as a police officer again.  Immediately after the crash, police noticed the driver smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes, and slurred her speech.  She admitted to consuming seven drinks before driving, and her blood alcohol content was twice the legal limit.
