According to U.S. News & World Report, a recent study of over 800 car accidents involving teenage drivers indicated that inexperience and distraction account for the majority of teen driving accidents. The study found that 76 percent of those crashes were due to a “critical teen error,” such as “lack of ‘scanning’ skill to assess the environment sufficiently while behind the wheel; driving too fast for road conditions (not necessarily going over the speed limit, however); or being distracted by something inside or outside of the vehicle.” The study calls for increased training for teenage drivers.
According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, auto accidents are the leading cause of death of 13-19 year olds. Teenage drivers can pose risks to themselves, their passengers, and other drivers and passengers. According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation (“TDOT”), the Tennessee Governor’s Highway Safety Office recently teamed up with the national Governor’s Highway Safety Office and Oprah Winfrey to increase awareness of the dangers of distracted driving. The campaign designated a special “No Phone Zone Day” to encourage drivers to put their cell phones away while driving. According to TDOT, 15 people die each day in distracted driving car accidents in the United States. In recognition of this statistic, Tennessee, along with many other states, passed a law that bans texting while driving. One Tennessee Governor’s Highway Safety Office official compared texting while driving to driving with a blindfold.

That afternoon, the driver of a City of Savannah public works truck was making a left turn from Geans Lane onto southbound TN 128 (Pickwick Road) when he clipped the back bumper of a GMC SUV that was also traveling southbound. The GMC driver and deceased were rushed to Hardin Medical Center where the deceased passed away just hours later.
